Who's it for?

Players who already know how to play Hong Kong mahjong and can finish a basic hand (a "chicken hand"). If that's you, you're ready — you don't need anything beyond our Learn to Play class.

You can finish a hand — but when someone announces a score, you nod along and hope. This class demystifies faan. You'll learn what your hand is worth, why one win pays more than another, and how to recognize value while you're still building. No more taking someone else's word for it.

What you'll learn:

  • Faan-based scoring from the ground up: what earns points, and why
  • The most common scoring patterns and how to spot them mid-hand
  • Who pays what — self-draw vs. discard, and how payouts are calculated
  • The difference between a fast cheap hand and one worth waiting for
  • Table etiquette and scoring conventions so you can sit down anywhere

What's included:

  • Live instruction from an experienced teacher
  • Full breakdown of faan-based scoring
  • A scoring reference sheet to take home
  • Tips on table etiquette and smarter decision-making
  • Comfortable studio with clean bathrooms and free parking

You'll leave able to score your own hands, check someone else's, and join a faan-scoring table with confidence.

Do I need to take anything first?

Just Learn to Play. That's our only class with a requirement — everything else is à la carte, and you can take them in any order.
