October World Riichi League (WRL) Minor Tournament Results!

Huzzah! We hosted our very first Riichi mahjong tournament! On October 4, Atlanta Mahjong Studio hosted the October World Riichi League (WRL) Minor Tournament!

Competitors traveled in from across the South, including Auburn, Columbus, and Huntsville, alongside Atlanta locals for a day full of tiles, laughter, and competition.

Final Results

  1. Dongtan L (Auburn)
  2. Paul L (Atlanta)
  3. “Mrs. K”  (Atlanta Mahjong Studio)
  4. Frederic F (Dunwoody)

There were two chombos committed during the event. Chombo Survivor shirts are available from the studio to welcome to the support club! (One of the offenders is under 5ft tall and buys her shirts at cost. Hmmmm).

This event was part of the official WRL circuit, meaning scores count toward advancing to the USPML End-of-Season Finals in March 2026. From there, top players can fight for a dream seat at the 2028 World Riichi Championship (basically the Olympics of Riichi mahjong!). Pairings and scoring were managed through the World Riichi App, allowing players to get real-time notifications and score updates.

Before the big day, our October 1 Practice Night gave everyone a chance to warm up, test the WRC rule set, and get comfy on the autotables.

Thank you to everyone who participated, spectated, and supported our very first tournament. Talk about a milestone! And this is only the beginning! We are already dreaming and scheming for our next WRL event in early 2026, and we have plans brewing for other tournament styles as well. Watch out for Hong Kong, Filipino, and Taiwanese!
