Information About Our Atlanta Mahjong Lessons & Classes

Mahjong can be intimidating.

If you didn’t grow up playing it, the tiles all look the same, the rules seem mysterious, and everyone at the table somehow knows when you’re about to mess up.

That’s exactly why we offer lessons. Whether you’ve seen mahjong in anime, grew up watching your lola play in the garage, or you’re just curious what all the clicking is about — we’ll get you playing confidently and having fun.

Our classes are small, friendly, and designed to get you to the table as quickly as possible. No lectures. No gatekeeping. Just real games, clear instruction, and no judgment if you call a chow when you meant to pung.

 

REQUIREMENTS & THINGS TO KNOW

  • If you’re brand new to mahjong, start with Hong Kong Beginner.
  • If you or someone in your group hasn’t played before, don’t book a table. Book a lesson instead.
  • Advanced and Guided Play sessions require previous experience.
  • We recommend completion of Hong Kong Beginner before reserving Japanese Riichi lessons.

If you’re not sure where you fit, just reach out. We’re happy to point you in the right direction — even if that direction is “not here... yet.”

 

HONG KONG MAHJONG LESSONS

$35 — Hong Kong Beginner - Lesson One

Learn the basics of Hong Kong Mahjong and start playing! This class covers:

  • Tile types
  • Basic rules
  • How to build a legal winning hand ("chicken hand")

Schedule:
Saturdays & Sundays: 1:00 PM – 3:00 PM


$35 — Hong Kong Stategy & Scoring - Lesson Two

Learn how point-based HK Mahjong works and get ready to play with more experienced players.

  • Faan scoring
  • Hand-building strategy
  • Table etiquette

Schedule:
Sundays: 3:30 PM – 5:30 PM  (can vary)

Prerequisite: Must have taken Hong Kong Beginner or be comfortable building a chicken hand.

 

PRIVATE HONG KONG LESSONS

$50 per person — Private Beginner or Advanced (Weeknights)

Prefer a private setting? We offer small group sessions for three or more outside of regular studio hours.

JAPANESE RIICHI MAHJONG LESSON COURSE

$300 per person — 5-Session Course

A deep dive into the most strategic style of mahjong. This course is ideal for anime fans, gamers, or players who want to get nerdy about yaku.

You’ll learn:

  • Tile differences and unique game flow
  • Riichi terminology
  • 30+ yaku win conditions
  • Scoring: han, fu, penalties
  • Full hands-on play with live scoring feedback
  • Table etiquette

Schedule: Five 2-hour sessions. All five sessions are required to cover the rules and reinforce learning through play. Our Riichi lessons start at various times throughout the year and always book fast, so be sure to reserve your seat early. 

Prerequisite: Must have completed our Hong Kong Mahjong for Beginners class.

FILIPINO MAHJONG

$50 — Filipino Mahjong (Weeknights)

Learn the fastest and easiest of the four-player mahjong styles.

  • Great for casual players or groups of friends
  • Minimum of 3 players to schedule
