Hong Kong “Points, Kinda” League - Saturday Matches
points have entered the chat...
When you're ready to move beyond Chicken Hands, this five-session league includes a Scoring Foundations class during the first session.
What Is the “Points, Kinda” League?
A structured Hong Kong mahjong play series for players who are ready to move beyond chicken hands and start playing with real scoring, while still keeping things friendly, supportive, and practice-focused.
This league introduces faan-based scoring, helping players transition into point-based play without the pressure of competitive leagues or tournaments.
If you’ve been comfortable making winning hands and are curious about scoring — or want more confidence using it at the table — this is your next step.
How It Works
- This series includes a MANDATORY Scoring Foundations class and play during the first session
- You will learn everything you need to know to play scoring Hong Kong mahjong
- No prior scoring knowledge required
- All following sessions focus on live play using points
- Each session is 2 hours long. If the East–South game cannot reasonably finish within the session, the final hand may be called early to end within two hours.
- Tables rotate between sessions to keep things social.
- Scores will be tracked for learning and reference. This is for fun and practice, not competition.
- Play with a 2 faan minimum
- This league is for practice and learning, not high-stakes competition.
- Mrs. K will be available for support, clarification, and rule questions — but players are encouraged to make their own decisions at the table
Scoring Rules
2 faan minimum required to win
- Calling a win without 2 faan causes no penalties beyond the learning moment. The no minimum hand is invalid and the player must try to pivot their hand. Play continues.
- Flowers do not count toward the faan minimum.
- Flowers of the round do not count as bonus.
- Players may use reference sheets freely
Points Payment
- Following the faan-laak table for payments.
- If the dealer wins the hand, points will be doubled.
- If the dealer loses the hand, payment will be the same as other players.
- The person who discards the winning tile will pay double points.
- If the person who wins the hand self-draws the winning tile, everyone will pay double points
Table consensus > perfection! If there is uncertainty, the table agrees on the closest reasonable interpretation and moves on. Mrs. K is the final ruling if needed.
Minor scoring mistakes do not rewind the game. We note it, learn from it, and keep going!
False calls, forgetting a flower, and incorrect numbers of tiles should be fixed when noticed. No penalties, just correct it and learn from it!
No negative vibes, no yelling — we are here to learn!

Requirements
You have taken our Hong Kong Beginner Class or already know how to:
- Build a legal winning hand (4 sets + 1 pair)
- Make basic calls (Pong, Kong, Chow, Mahjong!)
Scoring knowledge is NOT required
- Attendance at the first session (Scoring Class) is mandatory. Please be sure your schedule allows you to attend at least 2 of the remaining sessions.
What to Expect (Player Etiquette)
We follow “Say, Show, Do” by saying the call, showing the tiles, and then completing the action.
We help others at the table. We want to win, but we are all here to learn the game and have a good time!
We play at a friendly pace and avoid rushing other players or taking too long ourselves!
- This is not a tournament.
- No shaming for low-value wins.
- No criticizing another player’s discard choices.
- Mistakes are expected and welcomed — that’s the point of practice
